做市商最主要的功能是促进市场的流动性,所以又称流动性提供者(liquidity provider). 市场人士在某些交易上若找不到交易对手,可向提供相关交易做市服务(英文称为making a market)的做市商要求报价,做市商即会报出一个买卖双向报价,表示愿意并有能力按此报价进行交易. 在一些证券上,做市商会按市况不断报出买卖价. 做市商通常会持有相关证券以便提供做市服务.
